I first met the solutions focused approach to solving problems when I was working on my Ph.D.(1998 t0 2006), teaching science in a pupil referral unit and working as a behaviour specialist in a Local Authority Educational Psychology service. I was getting stuck using the old ways of reward and punishment that had already failed to engage children and was on the lookout for something more effective, more humane and easily doable. I found it in solutions focused practice.
To test the strength of the SF approach in real life situations I’ve taken it into every context of practice that I could find. If it was a good as it seemed, it could be applied to any situation where people were struggling with problems and make a useful difference to their outcomes. it is as good as it seems!
I have worked with individuals and teams in direct support and training in the fields of education, mental health, homelessness, social work, management, alcohol and substance misuse and team building.
My book ‘Transforming behaviour in the classroom; a guide to the solution focused approach’ came out a year ago and is available on Amazon.
